We’ve all heard that beauty and wellness start from within. But that doesn’t mean you should forego your skincare.

According to a survey by Instyle.com, 76% of women feel good when their skin looks good. Considering that the skin is the largest organ, it makes sense that caring for it benefits us internally, too.

How Does Skincare Become Mental Care?

It has been mentioned here at Wellness Path that “self-care is self-love in motion”. This means that any action you do to better yourself is a way of respecting and honoring your body. Since skincare provides holistic wellness, it is a form of therapy, too.

Aside from it giving us confidence by treating skin concerns, a skincare regimen creates healthy routines. A study by the Lancet Psychiatry notes that having consistent routines helps fight depression and loneliness. At the same time, getting immersed in your skincare and setting aside a time for it helps break worry cycles by encouraging mindfulness. You could even use your skincare time as a chance to meditate and allow your neurotransmitters to release happy hormones like endorphins.

How Do I Begin My Skincare?

Skincare, like other forms of self-care, is very personal! The routines, tools, and products you use for your skin depend on your skin’s needs, your personal goals, and how happy they make you. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different ingredients and products if you’ve done your research. But if you’re just starting out with skincare, take this as a chance to build a simple but effective routine that makes you feel good.

What Products Should Be in My Routine?

Cleanser

As the very first step of your skincare, you could even say that cleanser removes the impurities from your skin and from your day. Think of this step as akin to getting a clean slate. For most, a nice moisturizing non-comedogenic cleanser works fine. It will clean your skin without drying it out. This is especially important for those with mature skin or those in colder climates. Make sure to really take your time in this step. You want to remove all the dirt, makeup, and sebum build up. In Self’s guide to face washing, dermatologists recommend rinsing off with lukewarm water after a few lathers.

Moisturizer

If you have oily skin, you may be tempted to skip moisturizer. But this is an important since it keeps skin hydrated while locking in all the good products you just used. When looking for a moisturizer, find a rich formula that features nourishing oils like sunflower seed oil and glycerin. Moisturizers with added ingredients like Vitamin E also help skin cell turnover. PrettyMe’s AR Vitamin E Cream review even notes that you can use ultra-hydrating formulas on the rest of your body. After applying an even layer of moisturizer, you can incorporate a lymphatic massage. By applying firm upward strokes under your jaw and across your cheekbones, you can reduce swelling, promote blood flow, and relax any tension!

Sunblock

Last but not the least: sunblock. While other steps in skincare are a little more open to interpretation, sunblock has guidelines that must be followed. Aside from helping prevent premature aging due to sun damage, sunblock can reduce the risk of skin cancer by up to 40% according to a statement by Harvard Health. Remember to choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen that is at least SPF 30. When applying, be generous! Use a teaspoon worth of product and apply it all over exposed skin. Don’t you already feel less anxious knowing that you’re well protected?

With everything happening in our lives, skincare can be an afterthought. But investing in self-care is one thing we shouldn’t forget. With a regular routine, you’ll soon notice you’re feeling better inside and out.
